The Importance of Knowledge

In an eloquent post last Sunday, a blogger from Lebanon named Fouad, who I follow for his maturity, (relatively) calm insight into the Middle East, and lovely and revealing photography, questions his commitment to his religion of choice (Christianity) and of birth (Islam) given the troubling violence that has followed the misunderstanding by Muslims about the "offensive" cartoons of the Prophet.

As Fouad will know, I have recently read Harold Bloom's astounding -- and oh so difficult -- Jesus and Yaweh: The Names Divine. Bloom writes something that speaks directly to Fouad's self-reflection . . . "Judaism emphasizes trust in the Covenant, Christianity professes faith that Jesus himself was the New Covnenant, Islam is submission to the will of Allah, but trust, faith, submission are none of them knowledge."
