Love the Numbers
This will surprise many and delight Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook, but all the mumbling and complaining about Facebook , fake news and hate content have had virtually no impact on Facebook’s usage among U.S. adults. As the Pew Research Center reports, “The shares of adults who say they use Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Twitter are each largely the same as in 2016, with only Instagram showing an uptick in use during this time period.” Only Facebook use among teens has dropped over the past few years, which, I am hazarding a guess here, is unlikely a consequence of the fake news and Facebook’s misuse of data debate.
In an effort to constrain spam, Twitter earlier this year clamped down on a number of Twitter apps for violating its following-and-follow churn rules. Essentially bots, the apps “allowed their customers to automatically follow a large number of users with little effort.” Now Sarah Perez of TechCrunch says “it’s cutting the number of accounts Twitter users can follow, from 1,000 per day to just 400. The idea with the new limit is that it helps prevent spammers from rapidly growing their networks by following then unfollowing Twitter accounts in a ‘bulk, aggressive or indiscriminate manner.’”
I missed this last week, but Twitter videos published through Twitter Media Studio, Twitter Ads, or the API “can now include SRT subtitles viewable on the web, iOS, and Android”, which may improve viewing times given Twitter video autoplays with the sound off.
YouTube will again be streaming live performances from two weekends at Coachella (April 12-14, April 19-21), which “Provides a global stage for artists and fans to connect with live stream performances from headliners to some of the biggest artists on the rise, including Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande, Tame Impala, Kacey Musgraves, Billie Eilish, BLACKPINK, Juice WRLD, Kid Cudi, Wiz Khalifa, Gryffin, Maggie Rogers, Chvrches Little Zimz, Cola Boyy and many more.”
Expect more ‘choose-your-adventures’ style programming (a la Netflix’s Bandersnatch) from YouTube. It has created a new unit dedicated to interactive programming and live specials”, with the first of these projects to be announced soon says The Verge.
As a further step in its plan to integrate WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger into a single platform, Facebook is “now looking to bring messaging back to the primary Facebook app experience” according to a report in TNW with information by way of app researcher Jane Manchun Wong.
